I’m in search of memoirs written by women from an adult POV. I’ve read a ton of memoirs, quite a few written by women, but many are childhood memoirs written from the point of view of the child. The Bell Jar is my absolute favorite, and I’ve added The Diary of Virginia Woolf to my To-Read shelf. Books I did not enjoy include A Girl Named Zippy. Rather than list all the books I’ve read, and the ones I’ve marked to-read, it might be easier if you want to take a look at my bookshelf on Goodreads. I’m looking for memoirs to inspire my writing. If you have any recommendations, please put it in the comments below. Thanks for your help!
Not sure if you are interested with Geisha’s story but soon I will start reading Memoirs of a Geisha and then Geisha of Gion after.
That’s a really wonderful book! I haven’t read Geisha of Gion. Not really what I’m looking for, but all female memoir is relevant, in some way, to all of our stories. Thank you!
Oh Memoirs of a Geisha is not written by a woman but just from a point of view of a woman. Geisha of Gion is written by a woman and from an adult POV.
Oh, I’ll definitely check it out. Thanks!
I see that you have Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild” on your bookshelf, but it doesn’t look like you’ve read it yet? If not, you should. I found it absolutely terrific and heart-wrenching, and not your typical “woe is me” memoir.
If you’re interested, I posted my review on GR: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/301094963
It’s been blatantly obvious for some time now that I need to read that book. Why, oh why, do I look under rocks for the answer when it’s right under my nose? Thanks for the suggestion:)
And thanks for the link to the review. I’ll check it out!
I would highly recommend “An Unquiet Mind” by Kay Redfield Jamison.
Yes, that’s come up a couple of times. I guess you’ve read it?
I’ve not only read it. I’ve tasted it. I’ve consumed it. I’ve digested it. And I’ve lived it. It is good. Very good.
Thanks for the enthusiastic recommendation! I have to read it now, of course.
I’d recommend checking out May Sarton and Anais Nin
Xx
Thank you! I will check them out!
I read one installment of the Diaries of Anais Nin. Chewy stuff–might fit your bill.
Oh–another one–The Gift of An Ordinary Day–Katrina Kenison. Great book–great insights.
I’ve run across that, but never read it. Thanks so much!
